Peñíscola - The City in the Sea
Peñíscola, known as "the city in the sea", is one of the most spectacular destinations on the Spanish Mediterranean. Located in Castellón, within the Valencian Community, it rises on a rocky outcrop crowned by its imposing Templar castle, creating an unforgettable skyline.
Peñíscola combines history, sea, nature, and Mediterranean charm. Its old town, perched on a rocky peninsula linked to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, is surrounded by centuries-old walls. Inside, cobbled streets wind among whitewashed houses, balconies overflowing with flowers, and cozy squares.
The crown jewel is Papa Luna Castle, a 13th-century Templar fortress later transformed into a papal palace by Benedict XIII (Papa Luna). From its terraces, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the modern city spreading across the isthmus.
At the foot of the castle, two beaches invite you to relax:
North Beach - Over 5 km of golden sand, perfect for swimming, water sports, and sunset strolls, with all the tourist amenities.
South Beach - Smaller and quieter, next to the fishing port, ideal for a more local experience.
Peñíscola is a year-round destination: lively and vibrant in summer, calm and authentic in winter ? perfect for exploring history, strolling the coast, or savoring its gastronomy.
Thanks to its medieval charm, Peñíscola has been the backdrop for productions such as El Cid and Game of Thrones. Every corner tells a story: fortified gateways, Gothic churches, defensive bastions, and traditional houses like the famous Casa de las Conchas.
Just minutes away lies the Sierra de Irta Natural Park ? one of the last unspoiled stretches of Mediterranean coastline. With rugged cliffs, hidden coves, ancient watchtowers, and hiking or cycling trails, it's a paradise for nature lovers.
Local cuisine is another highlight. Enjoy seafood rice dishes, fideuà, suquet de peix, and the region's specialties: Benicarló artichokes (DO) and exquisite olive oils.
In summer, Peñíscola vibrates with music festivals, classical theater at the castle, and open-air cinema. In September, the town celebrates its patron saint festivities with unique traditional dances and the spectacular Moors and Christians parade.
Even in winter, Peñíscola offers a rich cultural life: Christmas markets, traditional festivals, and peaceful seaside walks.
Peñíscola is much more than sun and beach:
It's an open-air museum by the sea,
A haven of medieval history and Templar legends,
A first-class natural and culinary destination,
One of the most beautiful towns in Spain,
We're perfectly connected by road and just a short distance from the center of Peñíscola.
Take Exit 43 of the AP-7 motorway.
Merge onto the N-340 towards Peñíscola.
Further on, join the CV-141.
When you see the campsite on your left, continue to the nearest roundabout, make a U-turn, and you'll find the entrance right ahead.
